  • This course is designed to orient and prepare students for the 'Ike Hawai'i Distance Learning Program. Topics covered include Kamehameha Schools student expectations, preparation for distance learning courses, technical skills, navigation for Blackboard learning management system, and use of distance learning technologies to communicate effectively with instructors at a distance.

  • Ua lehulehu a manomano ka 'ikena a ka Hawai'i. Great and numerous is the knowledge of the Hawaians ('Ōlelo No'eau 2814). This course will provide students with a general understanding of the culture of the Hawaiian people. The focus will be on traditional culture and society. Units of study include migration, voyaging, origin, geology, ecology, land division, fishing and farming, religion, society, chiefs, and recreation.

  • This course is an overview of Hawaii’s past and present history.   Students will explore the historic, geographic, socio-political, economic, and the multi-cultural development of modern Hawaii as well as study the effects of change on the people of Hawai`i.  Course content begins with a quick look at pre-contact Hawaiian civilization, the campaign of Kamehameha Nui, then through the change brought about by the first foreigners to the islands, continuing on through statehood and modern movements and issues.

  • This is a thematic course of study based on the concept of Hawaiian leadership. Curriculum will focus on learning about historical leaders from different time periods an their impact on Hawai'i. Students will engage in discussions and explore unique qualites and characteristics that define a Hawaiian leader. The culmination project for this course will include a research based, multimedia profile of a Hawaiian leader guided by the Big6 process. The Big6 integrates information search and use skills along with technology tools in a systematic process to find, use, apply, and evaluate information to specific needs and tasks.

  • This course is designed to expose learners to a comprehensive study of Language Arts through the integration of reading, writing, literature, language and oral communication. Learners will read and interpret a wide range of genres including fiction and non-fiction. Learners will focus on their own personal histories, cultures, perspectives, and experiences as they develop multiple levels of responses to literature including initial, personal, analytical and evaluative. Learners will also be given many opportunities to develop their own voices through a variety of authentic and relevant assignments and assessments. Texts used will reflect traditional to contemporary Hawaiian Pacific Literature. For the purposes of this course, Hawaiian Pacific Literature is defined as literature written by indigenous people of the Pacific.

     If you are interested in receiving a Kamehameha Schools Distance Learning Certificate, you will need to complete four (4) 'Ike Hawai'i courses with a passing grade.
