Email: lukawaa@ksbe.edu Notes: Kumu Luana has worked in various positions in the Hawaiian Language Immersion Program for over a decade. She is currently the Hawaiian Protocol Facilitator at Kamehameha Schools Maui working in the Headmaster’s Office. In her current capacity she facilitates the 'ike and Nohona Hawai'i initiatives and advises Po'o Kula DeLima and the Maui Leadership Team in cultural protocol and Hawaiian language. An accomplished Kumu Hula, Luana completed the 'ūniki process under Kumu Hula Hōkūlani Holt- Padilla and ran Hālau Hula Ka Makani Kili'o'opu for 12 years. She is currently on sabbatical from hālau to allow time to pursue a Master’s Degree in Education. As an A‘o Makua PT Instructor, Kumu Luana facilitates adult distance learning courses by incorporating distance learning pedagogy and the integration of Hawaiian language and cultural practices. She encourages open communication with participants to create a virtual community. The proud mother of 4 children, Kamalani, Kamalei, Kamaehu and Kamahiwa, she and her husband Llewellyn enjoying spending time together as an 'ohana. They are actively involved in their church, Boy Scouts of America and Hula. The foundation of their 'ohana is built upon Aloha Ke Akua (love for God), Aloha ' Āina (love for the land) and Aloha Kekahi I Kekahi (love one for another). In her spare time, Kumu Luana enjoys reading, writing, journaling and is working on publishing her first book, Morning Mana'o: Reflections from a Hawaiian Soul, scheduled for distribution in late Fall 2008. |
