The ‘Ike Hawai‘i Program encourages family involvement in every component from the orientation to the end of the semester Hō‘ike or student showcase. The Ho‘omaka or orientation DVD includes a section that specifically focuses on ways that parents can support their child’s online learning experience. All parents are also e-mailed detailed progress reports once a week. Click on the image to the right to view a portion of the orientation DVD.

We feel that communicating frequently and effectively with parents assists in keeping students motivated and accountable. Another goal of the program is to provide opportunities for students to connect their learning to their life and life experiences by reflecting on their own cultural beliefs, traditions and values. Thus, all courses include assignments and projects that require students to gather information and primary research from people in their family. For example, in Unit 4 of the Hawaiian History course, students have the option to interview immigrants in their family. Click on the image to the right to view the assignment instructions.

Parents are also invited to attend a hands-on field trip each semester to a culturally significant site or to participate in a traditional practice such as tending to a taro patch or helping to restore a traditional fishpond. At the close of each semester, parents are invited to view a virtual Hō‘ike or showcase of student work. Parent feedback is solicited, via online or hard copy surveys, after each of these components. Parent responses are used to continually improve relevant opportunities for students to learn from and share with those in their families.
