“PERSONALIZING Online Education as we BUILD Learning Communities in Cyberspace”
Because of the changing nature of today's students, economic pressures, and rapid implementation of distance learning courses and programs, definitions of what constitutes education and learning are changing, too. The use of distance learning technologies, and more specifically, online distance learning, have both grown out of and enhanced the changes now occurring in the delivery of education. Thompson Academy will share the lessons learned in this brief but intense 5-year journey developing an exciting alternative to traditional schooling as we know it today.

A veteran educator with an outstanding background in both state and school-level administration in Hawaii, Diana Oshiro is currently the principal of Myron Thompson Academy, a K-12 public charter school offering online secondary and elementary home-based schooling. Now in its fourth year, enrolment at the Myron Thompson Academy has grown from 30 to 774, with students from Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, to Hawaii. Komarey Moss is a science teacher at Myron Thompson, and coordinator of activities on Coconut Island, a satellite site of the school.
